The original Mine Shaft Tavern opened in Madrid sometime around 1895 and burned to the ground on Christmas Day in 1944. It re-opened in 1947 as the last “company town” structure to be built. Much of the interior looks the same today as it did a century ago, including the famous 40-foot lodge pole pine bar, which is the longest stand-up bar in Santa Fe County. Here, miners once stood at the bar after spending a long day hunched over inside the mines.

The tavern today bills itself as “a cultural gem of the mining district” and one of America’s “last great roadhouses.” The menu features food from scratch using quality and organic ingredients as much as possible and the tavern hosts live music as well as the annual Crawdaddy Blues Fest.
