During the 14th and 15th centuries, the Galisteo Basin was home to a large pueblo population which had all but disappeared following  the Pueblo Revolt of 1680 and the  Reconquista of 1692.  The current village, which is the 3rd settlement, wasn’t founded until at least 1814.  Those settlers settled on the land in part to take advantage of the good grazing.

Today, the all-adobe village has a population of about 250 people, including many artists inspired by the high desert landscape and gorgeous sunsets. The annual Galisteo Studio Tour, held in October, is a popular event showcasing paintings, pottery, photography, jewelry, sculpture, wearable art and more in the village’s many studios.

Galisteo’s landscape may look familiar, as many Western films have shot on location here, including “The Cowboys,” “Silverado,” “Young Guns,” “The Hi-Lo Country,” and the Academy Award-winning Crazy Heart,” along with fantasy blockbusters “Legion” and “Thor.”
