Although you should watch, and listen for, prairie rattlesnakes in the Turquoise Trail habitat, the harmless the colorful bullsnake is the most common snake here . They help control the rodent population as does the the prairie snake. The western coachwhip is harder to find, which is surprising since it has a pink color and can grow as long as six feet.

Prairie lizards are often seen among the rocks or grasses, and the horned lizard also lives here, along with the smooth, shiny green plains skink, which grows up to eight inches in length. In mid-September and early October, watch for the four-inch brown tarantulas, often crossing roadways.
